Geared to the national major requirements and great opportunities of aerospace science and space craft technology, the School of Aerospace Science and Technology (SAST) was founded in Xidian University on July 14th, 2013 with Professor and Academician Weimin Bao as the founding Dean in July 2013. Academician Bao, as a distinguished Alumi of Xidian University, is also the director of Science and Technology Committee of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. SAST is comprised of three departments, i.e., the department of the measurement and control, the department of the guidance, navigation and control, and the department of the intelligent control. All of these three supporting departments formerly come from key divisions in the school of Telecommunications Engineering, the school of Electronic Engineering, and the school of Electro-Mechanical Engineering. Combining the related disciplines in these well-established schools have laid solid foundation for SAST’s current education and research work, as well as its future development.
SAST has 40 faculty members, including 2 dual-employed academicians, 7 advisers for Ph.D. programs, 6 professors, 15 associate professors and 11 lecturers. 27 faculty members are doctoral degree holders while another 6 have a Master's degree. SAST offers various programs for 270 undergraduates, 180 postgraduates and 60 Ph.D. candidates.
The main research platform of the Aerospace Science (AS) is based on all types of spacecraft, including the artificial satellite, earth and space station, installer explorer, manned spacecraft, and strategic delivery vehicle, etc. The research objective of AS is to broaden the cognitive range of human beings, exploit the emerging and strategic resources, as well as accelerate the development of the space technology. To achieve this, AS researchers make their effort on discovering and probing the law of nature in space 20 km above the earth (starting from the near space, low earth orbit, outer space, solar system orbit up to the interstellar space), on issues of the physical environment, astrophysics, transmission of information, etc.
SAST is a research oriented school and it consistently puts the academic training in the first place. SAST targets on doing the frontier research in field of aerospace science. Supported by the discipline construction, the fundamental goal of SAST is to cultivate the innovative people most needed in the development of the state astronautic technology. It serves national development demand with the research results and talent people, which combine the fundamentality, innovativeness and engineering quality.
